# TinyEst - Tiny Estimator

Daniël de Kok <<me@danieldk.eu>>

## Introduction

TinyEst (pronounced *tiniest*) is a maximum entropy model parameter
optimizer for ranking tasks (e.g. parse ranking). It uses the liblbfgs
library to minimize the negative log-likelihood of the model. The
program emphasizes simplicity and clarity of data structures.

TinyEst has the following features:

* LBFGS parameter estimation.
* Smoothing using l1 and l2 regularizers.
* Feature selection methods:
  - Grafting
  - Grafting-light

## Compilation

Compilation of TinyEst requires a C99 compiler and the CMake build tool,
and can be performed in two simple steps:

    cmake .
    make

Afterwards you will find the 'tinyest' library and 'estimate' utility.

**Note:** Unfortunately, Visual Studio does not support C99.

## Input format

tinyest expect input in [TADM](http://tadm.sourceforge.net/) format. A
description on the TADM format can be found on the TADM page. tinyest
does not support a header. Moreover, the frequency of an event can be
a floating point number (e.g. to indicate the probability of an event
rather than a frequency).
