# Statement of Significance

A statistical procedure used to assess the control of nuisance parameters (stimulus or participant confounds) is inapplicable. This procedure (null hypothesis significance tests to establish balance) is extremely prevalent particularly in the experimental study of the neurobiology of language. We discuss the nature of the problem, and what to do instead.
