Unfortunately and annoyingly, the ixgbe driver has been traditionally difficult with non-vendor SFPs. These systems have been running precise until now. precise kernel's ixgbe blocked non-Intel SFPs completely, so we had resorted into patching the driver ourselves, build the kernel module, embed it into the d-i initramfs and also provide it as a DKMS package for post-install kernel upgrades. Newer kernel versions do support it natively but they require a module parameter, allow_unsupported_sfp, to be set to 1 (defaults to 0). This passes this parameter to the kernel command-line from PXE so that those systems can boot and install. d-i will probably carry that option into the final system's grub config; we can decide to either keep that, or supply a modprobe.d config from puppet instead (and regenerate the initramfses). Labstore1001 especially has difficulty sustaining the extreme bursty load that any operation can trigger. These shaping values are based on data collected from the nfsiostat diamond collector deployed a few weeks ago. This will all most likely require tweaking over time.
